Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5, Verse 19 – The Vision of Equality
Sanskrit Verse:
इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः।
निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्माद् ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः॥
Transliteration:
Ihaiva tair jitaḥ sargo yeṣhāṁ sāmye sthitaṁ manaḥ
Nirdoṣhaṁ hi samaṁ brahma tasmād brahmaṇi te sthitāḥ
Translation:
"Even here in this world, they have conquered birth and death whose minds are established in equanimity. Since the Supreme Brahman is flawless and equal to all, such persons are also established in Brahman."
" इस संसार में भी, वे लोग जन्म-मृत्यु पर विजय प्राप्त कर चुके हैं, जिनके मन समभाव में स्थित हैं। चूँकि परम ब्रह्म दोषरहित और सबके लिए समान है, इसलिए ऐसे लोग भी ब्रह्म में स्थित हैं। "
Explanation:
In this verse, Lord Krishna explains the significance of attaining a state of equanimity and how it leads one to spiritual liberation.
-
Overcoming the Cycle of Birth and Death:
-
Those who develop an equal vision toward all beings, without distinctions of friend or foe, pleasure or pain, are already liberated in this life.
-
They rise above worldly illusions and attachments, thus overcoming the cycle of birth and rebirth (samsara).
-
-
Equanimity as a Divine Quality:
-
The Supreme Brahman (God) is free from faults and remains neutral, treating all beings equally.
-
When a person cultivates this impartiality and equanimity, they align themselves with the divine.
-
-
Path to Liberation (Moksha):
-
The ultimate goal of spiritual practice is to merge with Brahman, the formless divine essence.
-
By practicing inner balance, one transcends material bondage and attains self-realization.
-
Practical Application:
-
Developing a Balanced Mind: Practicing detachment from external circumstances helps in maintaining inner peace.
-
Seeing Beyond Differences: Treating people equally, irrespective of status, caste, or background, leads to harmony in life.
-
Spiritual Growth: Meditation and self-discipline help in cultivating an impartial vision and connecting with the divine.
Conclusion:
Bhagavad Gita 5.19 teaches that true wisdom lies in seeing all beings with equal vision. Those who attain this state are already liberated, as they resonate with the flawless and impartial nature of the Supreme. By practicing equanimity, we not only purify our own consciousness but also align ourselves with divine truth, leading to ultimate liberation.
