Bhagavad Gita 5.5

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 5, Verse 5 – The Path of Renunciation and Yoga

Sanskrit Verse:

एकं साङ्ख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स पश्यति।।

Transliteration:

Ekaṁ sāṅkhyaṁ ca yogaṁ ca yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati.

Translation:

One who sees that the path of knowledge (Sankhya) and the path of action (Yoga) lead to the same goal truly sees things as they are.

" जो यह देखता है कि ज्ञान का मार्ग (सांख्य) और कर्म का मार्ग (योग) एक ही लक्ष्य की ओर ले जाते हैं, वह वास्तव में चीजों को वैसी ही देखता है जैसी वे हैं। "

Explanation:

In this verse, Lord Krishna explains that both the path of renunciation (Sankhya Yoga) and the path of selfless action (Karma Yoga) ultimately lead to the same spiritual realization.

  1. Sankhya Yoga (Path of Knowledge) – This path involves deep contemplation and realization of the self beyond the material world. A Sankhya Yogi renounces worldly attachments and seeks liberation through wisdom and self-inquiry.

  2. Karma Yoga (Path of Action) – This path emphasizes selfless action performed with devotion, without attachment to the results. A Karma Yogi dedicates their work to the divine, achieving the same spiritual liberation as a Sankhya Yogi.

Krishna assures Arjuna that both paths are valid and ultimately merge into the same truth. The real wisdom lies in understanding that both approaches complement each other and are not contradictory.

Practical Application in Daily Life:

  • Balance Knowledge and Action: Wisdom without action is incomplete, and action without wisdom can be misguided. A true seeker must integrate both.

  • Selfless Service: Performing duties with a sense of devotion and detachment leads to inner peace and spiritual progress.

  • Harmony in Spiritual Paths: Different people follow different approaches to spirituality. Instead of seeing them as opposing, we should recognize their unity.

Conclusion:

Bhagavad Gita 5.5 teaches us that whether we choose the path of wisdom or the path of action, both ultimately lead to liberation. The key is to cultivate the right understanding and follow the path that suits our nature while maintaining dedication to the divine.
