Bhagavad Gita Verse 2.39: The Path of Wisdom and Action




Sanskrit Verse:

एषा तेऽभिहिता साङ्ख्ये बुद्धिर्योगे त्विमां श्रृणु।
बुद्ध्यायुक्तो यया पार्थ कर्मबन्धं प्रहास्यति॥

Transliteration:

eṣhā te ’bhihitā sānkhye buddhir yoge tvimāṁ śhṛiṇu
buddhyā yukto yayā pārtha karmabandhaṁ prahāsyasi

Translation:

"This wisdom has been imparted to you in the analytical knowledge (Sankhya). Now listen to the wisdom of Yoga, which when practiced, will free you from the bondage of karma."



"यह ज्ञान तुम्हें विश्लेषणात्मक ज्ञान (सांख्य) में प्रदान किया गया है। अब योग के ज्ञान को सुनो, जिसका अभ्यास करने पर तुम कर्म के बंधन से मुक्त हो जाओगे।"



Explanation:

In this verse, Lord Krishna transitions from explaining Sankhya (the path of knowledge) to the path of Karma Yoga (selfless action). He tells Arjuna that he has already explained the philosophical wisdom of the eternal soul (Atman) and the transient nature of the physical world. Now, he introduces Karma Yoga, which will help Arjuna act without attachment and break free from the bondage of karma.

1. Sankhya – The Path of Knowledge:

  • Sankhya refers to the analytical understanding of the self and the distinction between the eternal soul (Atman) and the temporary body.

  • Every action performed with attachment leads to consequences that bind an individual to the material world.

  • Krishna assures Arjuna that by practicing this approach, he will free himself from karmic bondage.

This verse teaches an important life lesson: knowledge alone is not enough; applying that knowledge through disciplined action is essential. In modern life, this principle can be applied in various ways:

  • Work without Attachment: Perform your duties diligently but without obsessing over rewards.
  • Balance Between Knowledge and Action: Intellectual understanding must be complemented by practical application.
  • Freedom from Stress and Anxiety: When actions are performed with a sense of duty rather than for personal gain, they bring peace of mind.
