Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6, Verse 46 – The Supremacy of the Yogi
Sanskrit Verse:
तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोऽधिकः |
कर्मिभ्यश्चाधिको योगी तस्माद्योगी भवार्जुन || ६.४६ ||
Transliteration:
Tapasvibhyo'dhiko yogī jñānibhyo'pi mato'dhikaḥ
Karmibhyaśchādhiko yogī tasmād yogī bhavārjuna || 6.46 ||
Translation:
"The yogi is superior to the ascetics (tapasvis), greater than even the wise (jñānis), and higher than the ritualistic performers (karmis). Therefore, O Arjuna, become a yogi!"
" योगी तपस्वियों से श्रेष्ठ है, ज्ञानियों से भी महान है, तथा कर्मकाण्ड करने वालों से भी अधिक महान है। इसलिए हे अर्जुन! तू योगी बन जा !"
Understanding the Verse
In this verse, Lord Krishna emphasizes the supreme position of a yogi, encouraging Arjuna to adopt the path of yoga. Krishna compares the yogi with three types of spiritual practitioners:
-
Tapasvi (Ascetic): One who engages in intense austerities and self-discipline. While such practices have their significance, mere penance without devotion and inner realization is incomplete.
-
Jñāni (Wise Person): A learned scholar or philosopher who possesses deep knowledge. However, knowledge alone, if not applied with devotion and self-discipline, remains intellectual and does not necessarily lead to liberation.
-
Karmi (Ritualistic Worker): One who strictly follows religious duties and rituals. While karma (action) is important, Krishna suggests that detached, selfless action integrated with devotion (karma yoga) is superior.
A yogi, however, combines the best qualities of these three paths. A yogi practices meditation (dhyana yoga), self-discipline, devotion, wisdom, and action with a spirit of selflessness. Hence, Krishna urges Arjuna to become a yogi.
Relevance in Modern Life
This verse holds profound significance in today’s world. Many people pursue knowledge, perform rituals, or engage in hardships, but true spiritual progress comes through a balanced approach. The qualities of a yogi—meditative awareness, self-discipline, wisdom, and selfless action—are essential in our daily lives.
-
For Professionals: Practicing mindfulness and maintaining inner balance while working helps achieve success without stress.
-
For Students: Focused learning with inner clarity leads to better understanding and wisdom.
-
For Spiritual Seekers: A yogic lifestyle integrates devotion, meditation, and selfless service, leading to inner peace and enlightenment.
Thus, Krishna’s message is clear: Become a yogi, for the yogi is the highest among all spiritual aspirants.
